Kay H. Lin :: biography
Landscapes are considered to be the highest form of Chinese painting, exploring the relationships of man and nature and often evincing subtle social, philosophical, or political convictions. The new work of Kay H. Lin takes traditional Chinese landscape painting in a radical new direction, while preserving the essence of both the formalisms and the aesthetics of the form.
In the Endless series, Ms. Lin explores nature and the turn of seasons in both painting and poetry written by the artist. However, instead of ink on paper, each scroll is acrylic and oil paint on canvas with layers of colors in the stroke and gesture of contemporary abstraction and expression. Viewed solely as a painting, each work is thoroughly modern with clear Western abstract influences.
Underlying the modern appearance however, is a true sense of the Chinese landscape painting. Both painting and poem reflect the mind immersed in nature within a meaningful emotional context. The hanging scroll format, Chinese calligraphy and red signature seal are customary elements that establish these pieces as successors to the Chinese landscape painting tradition.
